In view of the prevalent situation in the country arising out of pandemic Corona Virus (COVID-19), the competent authority of the Council of Architecture has decided to postpone the ensuing First Test of NATA 2020 examination scheduled for August 01, 2020.

Further, Council of Architecture, considering the threat of COVID-19 and keeping in mind the concerns about the health and safety of the students and the Advisories & Guidelines issued by various Central/State Governments, has decided to conduct both Parts A (Drawing test) and B (Test on Scientific Ability & General Aptitude) of NATA 2020 as an online aptitude test.

Now, the Part-A Test (Drawing Test) will not be paper based drawing test but as preferential choice type test which is to be answered on computer/laptop. The syllabus for Part-A Drawing Test has also been revised and is as under:

“Understanding the important visual principles in a composition (2D OR 3D) such as balance, rhythm, direction, hierarchy, etc. Understanding geometry and the ability to visualize shape and solve geometrical puzzles to test spatial intelligence; Understanding color theory and the various terminologies to test color scheme awareness and knowledge; Visual system interpretation and perception to test graphical similarities and other properties; Ability to understand spatial relationship between objects, and to visualize images and scenarios; Tests for cognitive ability: perception, attention, recognition, memory etc.”

The candidates may opt to appear for NATA 2020 from their respective places of residence/stay or at  the Council allotted test

centre in case they do not have net connectivity or technical/hardware resources such as PC, laptop, web cam etc. The candidates will soon be provided an option in their respective login accounts to opt for their preference for examination for NATA 2020 i.e. from home or test centre.

The First Test is now proposed to be held on 29.08.2020 while the date for the Second Tests of NATA 2020 examination will be announced in due course. Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT) is for the candidates who qualify JEE Advanced and wish to take admission in the B. Arch. program offered by IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee only. Note that the admission in B.Arch courses is not as per AAT rank or score, it is based on JEE Advanced AIR. However, passing AAT is mandatory for being considered for B.Arch seat allotment. To appear in AAT candidates need to register separately after JEE Advanced 2020 Result. This exam is also held at a national level to appear in which the candidates have to use their JEE Advanced 2020 Admit Card.

As per the eligibility criteria for B.Arch. and B. Planning courses and according to the opinion of Subject Experts, a few changes in the pattern of the question paper(s) and number of questions(s) for B.E./B.Tech, B. Arch and B.Planning have been approved by the JEE Apex Board (JAB) for the conduct of JEE (Main)-2020 Examination. These were also implemented in JEE(Main) January-2020 Examination.

NATA measures the aptitude of the applicant for specific field of study, i.e. Architecture. The test makes an assessment of drawing and observation skills, sense of proportion, aesthetic sensitivity, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics at 10+2 level and critical thinking ability that have been acquired by the candidate over the past few years and are related to the specific field of study.

With the objective of attracting a greater number of bright aspirants for studying Architecture and practicing the same as a profession in future, CoA like every year will be conducting NATA-2020 for admission to B.Arch. in the academic session 2020-2021. NATA-2020 shall be conducted twice a year, thus giving opportunity to those students who miss out the first test due to some reason or other or wish to improve upon their NATA score in the first test by re-appearing the second test. Both the first and second test will be conducted on a different date as a one-day online examination all over the country. The test shall consist of two parts: Part A is on Drawing, which is paper based and Part B comprises of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ)on Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and general aptitude which is to be answered online.

 NATA 2020 is a qualifying aptitude test for admission into the B. Arch degree program, subject to fulfilment of eligibility criteria prescribed by the Council. The candidates who have passed 10+2 level examination with at least 50% aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics (PCM) and also at least 50% marks in aggregate of the 10+2 level examination or passed 10+3 Diploma Examination with Mathematics as compulsory subject with at least 50% marks in aggregate, shall be eligible to appear for NATA-2020.

The candidates appearing for 10+2 examination with PCM or 10+3 Diploma with Mathematics in the current year may also provisionally appear for NATA-2020, subject to fulfilling the above criteria.

Do Architecture Entrance need coaching guidance?

Ever since you thought about becoming an architect, you either joined a coaching class or saw your friends depending on Google to crack JEE Paper 2 or NATA. You were told by experts that coaching is the solution to making your way into an architecture career. There are several students who have left their homes and took a hostel or small rooms and their only schedule consists of coaching classes. Did you stop and wonder whether you can top or crack an architecture entrance exam without a coaching?

To answer this, you will have to be 100% honest with yourself. Let us start with a few questions.

  1. Are you in class 11 or 12 or a dropper?

A dropper, or in other words one who completed class 12 last year or before that, and is solely preparing for architecture entrance exam, is advised to join a coaching class. The main reason behind this is to improve morale strength, get quick revision, be able to understand tough sections (the ones in which you face problems) from a good teacher at coaching and to get a reality check about your preparation for architecture entrance.

If you are in class 11, then you will really have to think. A lot depends on how much efforts you are ready to put into architecture entrance exam preparations (which are among the toughest exams) from DAY 1. Joining a good coaching class which guides you in the right direction, and helps you understand the topics being taught in architecture, will straight away help. However, it is not a do or die situation straight away to join a coaching class. You can take a few days to look into the study material and see whether you need help or not and decide.

If you are in class 12, then you are already in a good position to decide. Ask yourself this question:

 2. How well you know about architecture entrance examination or its exam syllabus?

Architecture entrance exams syllabus is not only wide but somehow not being touched throughout out our daily lives. Both of the entrance exams will ask you about basic of architecture but still if you do not have that vision or particular knowledge about architecture it might be an alarming situation. It is a much-debated topic on why a student at all needs coaching for architecture entrance exam when several materials are available online or its bit easy to crack architecture entrance respective to engineering or medical entrances.

Out of 3 sections in an entrance exam, drawing and architecture aptitude is somehow most score able yet need to get trained subject, which somehow, you’ll be getting from coaching only.  However, all that matters for the student is to analyse whether or not he or she needs extra help to understand any topic or subject.

  1. How well did you perform in class 12?

If you did excellently (read extremely above average), then you are already in the right direction. With the help of right study material, solving of mock tests, you are good to go. You may refer to coaching classes study material for extra practice!

On the other hand, if you think that you left a big scope for improvement in your performance and in critical thinking, then maybe you should join a JEE Paper 2 preparation or a NATA preparation coaching.

4. Are you good at time management?

It is a tough question to ask an architecture aspirant. You are young and have hardly been introduced to the concept of time management, there have been people older and in positions of immense responsibility who have shuddered at the thought of having to manage time with numerous tasks at hand. Still, this question is important.

When you join a coaching class for architecture entrance exam preparation, you commit at least 5-6 hours to it; this includes usual 3-4 hours of classes, 1 hour of travel and 1 hour to recover from travel fatigue. In the case of many, if the coaching centre is far away then a larger portion time is wasted in travel. Those who take weekend classes, spend almost the entire day there for two days a week. Like all other entrance examinations, architecture entrance too is of 3 hours but questions asked in the exams are lot lengthy and being tough to solve in the given time limit. Good Coaching will definitely help you to come out of this fear and will not prepare you for exam but will also help you to learn the techniques of time management during the pressure and stress of exam.

For any entrance exam, apart from right coaching self-studies are critical. You need to devote at least 3-4 hours every day for that. So, can you manage time for coaching, school, and self-studies? If yes, only then must you join a coaching centre.

Apart from the above points, there are several other factors too. It is up to you to decide whether or not to join a coaching class. Make sure that you follow some smart exams techniques so that you come out with flying colours.

Ahmedabad had a literacy rate of 79.89% in 2001 which rose to 89.62 percent in 2011. As of 2011, literacy rate among male and female were 93.96 and 84.81 percent respectively. In 2012, The Times of India chose Ahmedabad as India’s best city to live in. Ahmedabad has been selected as one of the hundred Indian cities to be developed as a smart city under Government of India’s flagship Smart Cities Mission. In 2010 Ahmedabad was ranked third in Forbes’s list of fastest growing cities of the decade.

The Gujarati community is largely known for its hospitality and for being shrewd businessmen. Ahmedabad is a big industrial city long reputed for its textile industry, and today more so for its chemical, petroleum, international trade & IT industries. For the first time in 20 years, all candidates taking the JEE will face less number of questions in physics, chemistry, mathematics as well as engineering drawing (for architecture aspirants). JEE is the entrance exam for all centrally funded technical institutes and colleges. It is also the eligibility exam for IIT JEE.

For the Bachelor of Planning course, only students who had physics, chemistry and mathematics in Class XII were so far eligible. Now, the criteria have been narrowed down to just mathematics in Class XII. Also, those seeking to enter the stream will not need to take the drawing test, which will be only for architecture aspirants.

Registration for JEE (Main) to begin from today

These changes were approved by the ministry of human resource development on Monday. The registration for JEE (Main) will commence from Tuesday. For the first time in 15 years of JEE, the number of questions have been reduced and the question typology changed. Earlier, engineering (BE/BTech) aspirants used to appear for three papers — mathematics, physics and chemistry — each comprising 30 multiple choice questions. From now on, each paper will have 25 questions. Of these, 20 will be MCQs and five “questions with answers as numerical value, with equal weightage to mathematics, physics and chemistry”.

For BArch, the mathematics paper will comprise 25 questions, with 20 MCQs and five objective-type. Questions in the drawing paper have been reduced from three to two. There will be an aptitude test of 50 marks in the MCQ format.

Mathematics and aptitude papers will remain common to B Planning and BArch aspirants. However, unlike previous years, there will be no drawing paper for B Planning aspirants and candidates instead will have to take a paper of 25 MCQs on planning.

“There are a number of changes introduced by the National Testing Agency for the JEE (main) to be held in January and April 2020. The details will be uploaded on Tuesday on the official website of NTA,” said Vineet Joshi, director-general, NTA. The first edition of JEE (Main) 2020 will be conducted from January 6 to January 11 and the second JEE (Main) will be held from April 3 to April 9. Registration for the January exam starts on Tuesday.

DRAWING QUESTIONS IN SHIFT 1:

 Q1. First question of the drawing section had three parts and students had to attempt any one of them for 30 marks. The questions were:

  • The first option was to design the curtain of a small girl’s room.
  • The second option was to sketch your favourite film actor.
  • The third option was to sketch the scene of people sitting around a bonfire.

Q2. In the second question of 20 marks students, a square design was given and students had to draw the same by drawing the replica to double its size.

Q3. For another and last question of the section of 20 marks was to draw a square with random designs using curved lines and colour.

 Q1. Make a mirror image of a shape. This was a 20 marks question.

Q2. There were 3 options of 30 marks each. Candidates had to attempt any 1 of them:

  • Picture of your school
  • Image of your favourite actor
  • Male shirt using patterns and colours

Q3. The last question was of 20 marks too. In this the candidates had to make any unusual shape only using triangles.
