    1. Since the NIFT Exam and the NID DAT Prelims Exam are to be conducted on February 14 and March 14 respectively. What advice would you give to the students who are finishing their preparations for these exams?

    Practice, practice, and explore!

Mind wonders and worries when it’s not occupied. Now wondering mind can be creative but with no sense of direction, the creativity can be chaotic as well. Since the exam dates are getting closer we do not suggest our students do anything different. Just to always keep their sketchbook with them all the time and keep sketching. By exploring I meant looking into the works of great designers and artists and also looking into different art and design movements throughout the ages. By doing this the students get new perspectives and ideas which they can later use in their work.

    2. In the NIFT Creative Ability Test, students would be evaluated on the basis of their creativity and illustration skills. In your opinion, how should they prepare themselves for these skills?

Sketch everything around you. Your study table, your pets, friends, parents, your room, kitchen, washroom, objects kept on the table. Just do not stop sketching and most importantly have fun while doing it. The students can take a step further and use daily life objects and create a 3d model. Just let the creative energy flow through you and enjoy the process. When you get in that state then new ideas come to you and when it does one should keep noting them down. It can be the next monalisa or next Facebook, who knows.

    3. The General Ability Test (GAT) includes questions of Quantitative Ability, English Comprehension, Analytical and Logical Ability and General Knowledge. What would the best strategy to tackle GAT considering it has a 30% weightage overall?

One should be aware of the current affairs, preferably reading the newspaper. This way you will be gaining general knowledge and sharpening your english language. We specially designed question papers on our website which will help students to tackle the analytical, logical, and quantitative types of questions.

    4. CAT and GAT are conducted for durations for 3 hours and 2 hours respectively, time management in these makes a huge difference. How should students manage their time while attempting CAT and GAT papers with 100 questions each?

Start with all the questions you’re sure about. Finish them first and quickly. Do not waste time on questions you’re not sure about. A lot of times students fall into the trap of attending to the questions they don’t know, this can waste alot of time. For CAT you have to rely on your speed again, be mindful, and aware of time when you’re attempting the creative section. We often lose our track of time when we are drawing, its a good thing but not good when you are giving exam.

    5. The NID DAT Prelims Exam is a paper with 26 objective and subjective questions. The syllabus consists of optical illusion, design theory, theme development, color theory and innovation among others. Considering all these topics, what would be the appropriate preparation schedule for NID DAT in 2 months?

There is no negative marking for NID-DAT and also objective questions are MCQ type, so you don’t have the restriction of checking whether your assumed answer is correct or not. Try to attempt all the question even if your only partially sure about a given questions. But be wise while choosing answers. Check yourself whether you have covered all the topics like Color Theory, Art Media, and movements and basic math recap, and so on. Solve previous year question papers with a timer and notice your strengths and weaknesses. At Pahal we have designed mock test papers and it’s mandatory for our students to solve all of them. This works as both practice and revision.
